Lichens can be used as air pollution indicators, especially of the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. This makes lichens natural indicators of air pollution. Air pollutants dissolved in rainwater, especially sulfur dioxide, can damage lichens, & prevent them from growing.
